Mistress And Master: Erotic Romances With Spicy Sex

February 9, 2014 by scarletdarkwood

As I’ve immersed myself in the waters of writing novels, I’m looking over the works I’ve published and Pleasure House is, by far, the “fairest of them all.” At least according to the purchases I get. Dance of Desire  is the other one that usually gets purchased afterwards. The warnings on both of these books are clear when you view the blurb: They are erotic pieces of work and not soulful sweet romances with spicy sex scenes. So there you have it. If you want “in-your-face” sex, sex, sex, these two books are it.

However, as I’ve discussed in other posts, there are readers who like their erotica with a story to it. Otherwise, readers usually label the work, porn because there is no central story line. Gee, I guess I thought the character’s sexual experience was the story line. Personally I’m okay with that, understand that, and like it when I’m in the mood (no pun intended!).

So, for all you romancers out there who still like the graphic sex but would like the focus on more than just the sex, then Mistress Of The House and Master Of The House will be more of what you’re looking for. I was careful to note there were adult situations in these books, and that they were for a mature audience, but they are romance, focus on the relationship between two characters, and there is the HEA (happily ever after).

The sex in these two books is still there, hot, rich, spicy, just the way erotica readers would like it to be. But if you want to know more of what the characters are thinking, what their agenda is, where there hearts are, these two books give you all that too. As a reader, you’ll get to see the characters in these two pieces of work put their House teachings to good use, and see them use creativity and sensuality in the bedroom get them what they want, while taking their partners on a fun-filled, lusty adventure.

Pleasure House definitely is the center piece in my House “box of chocolates,” and the three books mentioned above are some of the other tasty-filled treats.

The Sexy, Powerful Mistress Lover

September 14, 2013 by scarletdarkwood

For all you guys out there, do you like sirens and sexy, hot-blooded lusty vixens in bed, one who takes control of activities in the bedroom and leaves you panting for more? Do all you women want to be like these alluring creatures, with all their sensuous, flirty, and confident ways?

As I write my current WIP, Mistress Of The House, Thelma Starnsby, fresh from her stint at The House, is just that woman who is a powerful seductress who finds a way to practice all her sexual schooling on her beloved Harry Wisenburg, the man who sets her heart on fire. Hurt by his first wife, who turned their marriage bed into a proverbial icebox, Harry has repressed his sexual desire, refusing to acknowledge carnal pleasure in any way. But little by little, Thelma leads him into a hotbed of fun, exploration, and self-discovery, allowing him to return to the pleasures of sexual bliss.

Readers who have read Pleasure House, will remember that Thelma actually showed up and talked a little bit to Rose, telling her how she lured Harry into her web of intrigue. Like Wille and Louise, who come to life in Master Of The House, Thelma and Harry also come to life in this new WIP. And I must say, as I work on this current piece, I enjoy seeing these characters emerge, just like I saw Wille and Louise evolve in Master Of The House.

I’ll be telling more about this new work in future posts, but in the meantime, think about women and how you view them where sex is concerned. Do you like vixens in bed, or do you like the quieter, more submissive type? Do you like women calling the shots? Do you think men can be insecure about their performance in bed? Can a bad sexual relationship turn a man off completely from sex, making him shy away or give up? Do you think we have evolved or devolved in our views and treatment of women? I’d love to hear what you think, so don’t be afraid to speak up!

Is The Erotica Genre A Good One?

February 11, 2013 by scarletdarkwood

Writing erotica in an interesting journey, but one I’m glad I took. I chose this genre for my first attempts at novel writing because of the theme I wanted to work with. I’ve already written about this topic in another post, “This Is Erotically Insane.” However, I’ve been reading erotica on and off for many years, and I must admit I like reading for sensual pleasure when I’m in the mood–and I don’t have a headache!

At any rate, I do get the comments of “Why are you writing in that category?” “Why don’t you write something else?” “Can you not write about anything else but sex?” The list goes on. Even one person very close to me said that they wished I’d write in another category so I wouldn’t have to keep my writing such a big secret. I can’t blame that comment there, because it’s true, I do keep a lot of this writing secret from my family, friends, and co-workers.

When other people are promoting their book in my writer’s group, I feel I usually have to bow out due to the genre in which I write. But the big question is: If I had it to do all over again, would I choose to start out in another genre? Well, not really. After all, I could have just started out in another genre in the first place. And what’s interesting is that many authors who write in a particular category seem to try their hand at erotica at some point in their career. I’ve often wondered why they chose to do that, and I’m sure the answer is simple: they want to try their hand in another completely different category.

Contrary to popular belief, writing erotica isn’t an easy way out. I’d love nothing better than to trounce anyone who thinks or says such a thing. Writing a novel is writing a novel, no matter what category you choose. In science fiction and fantasy, you have all kinds of machines, world-building, and magical things to create, and languages to boot. In mysteries and thrillers, you have the gotcha moments and action-packed scenes to create. When incorporating wars into your work, you have to plan the battles and who’s doing what, where, when, and how.

In erotica, you’ve got to try to weave an interesting story while incorporating sex scenes, and on top of that, if sex is actually the driving force in your story, then the challenge is even greater to create a story that’s interesting and titillating. So please have some respect for those who write erotica. They’re no less than other authors just because they choose to write more about carnal pleasures.

So what about all of you readers out there? Do you think Erotica is a lesser category than other genres? Do you think this genre will ever hit mainstream markets like Romances, Mysteries, and Science Fiction and Fantasies have? Feel free to tell me what you think!
